another nice homebirth story

I want to share a beautiful birth with you that happened a few days ago. It was a second birth to a German couple who live in Rechovot and work at the Weizman Institute. Their first birth was a positive experience with a midwife in a homestyle birthing room in a hospital in Germany. However, despite the baby being only 3300 she had some serious tearing and it took her a long time to recover. She also felt that she wanted to birth more upright this time. Her first birth was induced with castor oil at 42 weeks. She was hoping that this birth she would not hold out to the end. They decided to birth in their own home, as they did not like the hospital options. She had a lovely pregnancy, and we developed a nice relationship as I did her prenatal examinations from early on. When I saw her last at 41 and a half weeks, she was a bit nervous about again carrying to the very end and needing castor oil, and the baby was growing big. However, she did practice with the epi-no from 37 weeks and felt that she was stretching nicely. When I examined her, she was very ripe and already 3 cm. and we agreed to do some gentle cervical massge to try to get her going. Next day she went into labor at 3 midnight, when her water broke. Contractions began soon after, very irregular. Two hours later she called again with regular contractions and I was happy to find her at 6 cm. She moved around a lot, mostly on all fours, and used the shower, and moaned. Then she began to push instinctively, and she sat on the birth stool, and soon the head was coming. I put warm oiled compresses on her perineum, and she pushed as she felt and then slowly breathed the head out at crowning. The head just kept coming out more and more, and then it was all out and REALLY BIG. And then the rest slid out, and I felt this BIG HEAVY WEIGHT in my hands and knew that this was one big baby! Sure enough it was a beautiful baby boy that weighed 4400, more than a kilo more than her first baby! (no gestational diabetes) And now you can all sigh a breath of relief----no tears! He was a great nurser, and I was happy that no one was sticking him for constant glucose checks like they do in hospital to all babies over four kilo or even 3800. I always felt instinctively that this was unecessary in non-diabetic women, and now in my latest midwifery journal MIDIRS there was a big article devoted to this issue, of abuse and harm from unnecessary glucose blood checking of newborns after birth. The whole family is ecstatic!
