I had a wonderful birth at home

Hello everyone, here is my birth story in English. A Hebrew version will soon follow.

I gave birth on Monday 23rd of December to a beautiful baby girl, called Meytal . It was my second home birth. My first birth was a water birth, and the second was on dry land. Both births were with Ilana Shemesh, and both were, in different ways, amazing.
This birth only took five and a half hours, but it was not an easy birth, because I was stuck with very strong contractions, fully dilated, for a long time. It turned out that the baby was very big (3.8 kilos), and I am quite small.
The last few weeks of my pregnancy had been a tense time, because the baby was breech, and then kept turning from breech to head down, and back again. Finally, an acupuncturist (Yanai Zeltzer), using moxa, managed to get my baby to turn head down, and stay there, at 39 weeks. After that, I expected the baby to be at least a week overdue, as she had only just turned.
So when, 2 days after my due date, I started having contractions at 4 in the morning, I didn't believe that I'd actually go into labour that day. In the morning, I went to the doctor to see which way the baby was, and was thrilled that the baby was head down (although I knew, anyway). That meant I could go ahead with the home birth I'd planned. As I left the doctor's surgery, I had another contraction, and had to squat in the street. I don't know what people thought. But I was still in denial. It wasn't til I got home and started cooking, and was squatting down next to the cooker every fifteen minutes with a contraction, that I finally admitted to myself that this was it.
I called my husband, and he left work and came home straight away. Meanwhile, I made myself a hot drink and put on some relaxing music, and focused my attention inwards. As soon as I was relaxed I went into active labour.
Ilana phoned when my contractions were seven minutes apart. She'd just recovered from having delivered another baby the night before. She said she'd be over in a couple of hours, but things progressed very rapidly from then. Suddenly my contractions were three to four minutes apart, and Ilana was rushing over to our house, concerned to make it in time for the birth.
When Ilana arrived, she and Amnon started setting up the birth pool. Ilana thought I'd probably have the baby before there was time to set up the pool, but I was sure there'd be time – I so desperately wanted to be in the water. Then there wasn't enough hot water to fill the pool - our dud wasn't big enough, so Amnon and Ilana were busy running round boiling saucepans of water, while I was labouring in shallow water. Finally, the pool was full enough for me to have a water birth. But suddenly I felt hot and dizzy, and I was hyperventilating. So I got out the pool, and continued labouring on land. By now, I was fully dilated, and the contractions were really painful. Ilana massaged my back, which really helped relieve the pain, but there was still no progress. Ilana found that the baby's head was stuck behind the lip of the cervix, so she held it open while I pushed, until the head got past. Then I tried pushing in different positions, but it wasn't until I squatted that the baby was born (once I squatted, the baby was born in fifteen minutes).
We soon understood why the baby had got stuck – she weighed 3.8 kilos, and had a massive head.
It was so wonderful having a home birth. Home is such a natural, relaxed environment for giving birth, which is why the labour progressed so well initially. And I felt in control of things all the time. And afterwards, it was so wonderful cuddling my beautiful baby under the soft lights, with relaxing music in the background, knowing that we didn't have to move anywhere, but just lie down and go to sleep.
People always tell me that I am brave to have a home birth, but for me the idea of giving birth in a hospital is frightening, with all the unnecessary and painful interventions that are done. I feel that birth is easiest and most natural at home, and both I and the baby came out unscathed, relaxed and happy.
