Wonderful treatment at Kaplan Hospital
כותרת:
Last week I had a hospital transfer for an intended homebirth. My lady's water broke at 38 weeks, clear, and all fine. As per my policy, we waited 24 hours, checking temperature. I waS not worried about infection as she had done a vaginal culture and was negative for Strep B (which can be dangerous for the baby in prolonged water broken) and we watched hygiene carefully. After nothing happened after 24 hours, we began castor oil (shemen kik) and nipple stimulation (massage and sucking) and still nothing . After close to forty hours with no contractions, we decided together that it was time to move to hospital. There she was greeted by a friendly staff that supported her in all her choices and options. She also called in an acupucturist and had some treatments (but still contractions didn't begin). The head of the delivery room, Dr. Roni Levy, must be a guardian angel for her. She wanted to wait more, and not have antibiotics, and he honored her decision. She didn't want a pitocin induced birth, and the hospital doesn't use prostaglandin induction on broken water. She was given the choice of trying an experimental drug from the U.S. by mouth to induce the labor. This way she could be free to move around and not be on the monitor and with an infusion all the time. Finally after being 2 more days in the hospital and after the second dose, her labor kicked in. She had a hard labor all night but this true heroine had the natural birth she wanted, with the help of a supportive hospital midwife on duty, with no epidural or drugs for pain, no episiotomy, and birthed her 3600 baby with a small tear only. This was for me the most amazing story of cooperation between an intended homebirth and a hospital transfer. Throughout her stay, staff were considerate of her needs, and even did not insist on antibiotics for the baby which the parents refused. I have never heard of any hospital being so liberal about 5 days of ruptured membranes. They say that men become gynecologists for two reasons: either they love women and want to serve them, or they ned to control and domiinate women. Well, it is obvious to me that Dr. Roni Levy is a true "lover of women". May there be many more like him! I also give tremendous credit to this couple who stood steadfast and determined and while totally assertive never became hostile or created antagonism. The times they "are a -changing"!!!!
