We only met two weeks ago, and there was instant chemistry and understanding between two women who knew the way birth should be and made the reality happen. She had two previous traumatic births in Russia years ago, and felt that many of her health problems were a result of them. She needed to have a spiritual and emotional and physical rebirthing during this birth. She is 41 years old, a wise women, who now trusts her body and believes in nature and has wonderful confidence that I wish I could bottle and market to you all!!She arrived in the middle of the night to my clinic and had a small dilation but had lost her plug earlier in the evening and was having mild contractions and her water had broken and was clear. She was happy and excited about the soon-to-be birth. She labored most of the night, sending me off to sleep. In the early morning she was 4 centimeters, and beginning heavy labor. Soon she wanted the tub and immersed herself and was softly moaning and I knew the baby was soon to come. Her husband was quiet and supportive and she knew just what she had to do. He and I watched in awe as she gently pushed the head out and the beautiful silky black hair fanned out in the water. The next push all the baby swished out and I gently scooped up the little fish and brought him to his Mama's outstretched arms which then eagerly cradled him to her chest. If only you could all have witnessed the miracle and marvel of this most sacred new life. Such a thrill to be a midwife.I think I will never be able to work in a hospital again.Such a birth demands the right atmosphere and intimacy.
