Kaplan Hospital in Rechovot is wonderful for homebirth back-up.

I had a wonderful home birth in my clinic last week. HOwever, after the birth, the baby seemed to be having some respiratory problems, and although the apgar was fine, and the color stayed fine, I didn't like the nasal flaring and grunting that signified labored breathing. I waiting for improvement, then gave oxygen after 10 minutes for about 10 minutes, and when there was no improvement at half an hour, I decided together with the couple that it would be best to have the baby checked out by a pediatrician at the local hospital. I called the nearby ambulance service, and alerted the delivery room at Kaplan Hospital in Rechovot. The ambulance drivers and paramedic (we know each other as they are my backup) were very efficient and nice and also gave oxygen to the baby, who was all the time on the mothers chest. By the time we arrived at the hospital after about 7 minutes, the baby's breathing was fine and the pediatrician found no problems. The midwives who admitted theMom were wonderful and professional and warm and welcoming and trying their best to accomadate and make the transfer as "homelike" as possible. When she couldn't pee in the bedpan, and there was no toilet in the room, the midwife brought her into the special "natural birth room" that has a toilet and helped her down, where she then was able to urinate. The mother was then welcomed by Dr. Kasif who went out of his way to be warm and tried to make her feel at home and then went to the nursery to inquire about the babies health for the mother. The father went with the baby to the nursery, and there the treatment was also excellent, and the baby even was able to get vitamin K by mouth instead of injection. He was connected by a velcro to his finger to a pulse-oxymeter to see the blood oxygenation and a cardiac monitor and under the warmer. He was constantly stroked by his father and later on the mother was wheeled in and I helped them to nurse. His blood sugar was tested, and that was normal too. He was fine, and there was no reason we know of for the problematic breathing in the first half hour, maybe he got cold after the birth, even though the room was warm and he was covered. Anyway, they stayed together all night (the three of them) and left next morning. The treatment was excellent and the non-judgemental and caring attitude of the staff, and their welcoming approach to me as a homebirth midwife from the outside puts Kaplan hospital as a wonderful back-up hospital for homebirth. I feel lucky to be so closely located to such a progressive hospital.
