great birth last night

Last night at 8:30 Maya called to say she was in labor. I was just saved from the dilemma of choosing what to wear to go out to dinner with friends. I notified them to once again cancel my reservation but my husband would at least have some good food and company. My friends are used to this (even in Eilat) Maya and husband and lovely trainee doula showed up at about l0:00. She had that heavy-duty look and said that her water broke on the way. Meanwhile her man brought in all the pachages, and suitcases from the car. Looking at the volume I guess they were intending to birth for a week. However when I checked her we were all delighted to find a great 8 centimeters. She moaned and rocked and did every position possible and sat on the birth ball and used the shower and soon enough had the urge to push. She layed down on her side and we waited but after about 5 contractions her hubby coaxed her into getting up and I prepared the birth stool, and then oops..while she was holding on to him and leaning over, half a head came out. Where were my gloves, oil ,hot compresses when I needed them most? Thank heavens for doula's help. Hand me this, hand me that, pour the oil, and breathe, breathe, a lovely head is out and we all wonder if the video was able to catch any of this. Then she squats and there is the baby wet and slippery onto her belly. Such elation and big big smiles . Of course I cant'see much as she knocked my glasses off when she grabbed the baby, but I'm very happy too. Nice big baby, nursing well, lovely placenta. Two hours later, after nursing and showering she goes to Asaf Harofe to get the babies bood type taken as she is Rh negative and to get a small tear stitched and to register and get the maanak lida and have the baby checked by the pediatrician. She is given the royal treatment and they even agree to take blood from the placenta instead of sticking the baby. Everyone is nice and treatment is quick and she is at her Mom's house sleeping by 5 AM. I feel really good and satisfied that this birth was so much better than her first hospital intervention-type birth, and there is another birth-empowered woman. I should go to sleep but I'm too excited so I will clean the clinic and wash the sheets for the next birth. Ilana
