great homebirth last night
כותרת:
I was an hour away from Modiin when I got the call that she was in early labor. Since it was a second birth and her first birth was not long, I certainly began to stress out and began to fear that I wouldn't make it in time. She reassured me that the contractions were very short and light and not to worry. Worry I did, and I decided to head straight for home, waiting for that fateful phone call from the husband asking me where I am because all of a sudden, they are now every two minutes and she is wanting to push. Lucky for all of us, she continued at a slow and easy pace. Just to make sure, I exited from Route 6 at Modiin and checked on her before heading home to the moshav . She looked great and we all had a nice chat and tea and cookies. She was only one finger dilated and still contracting weakly, so I went home. Then to relax I watched a movie, and couldn't believe it when on channel 4 was the movie with Sissy Spacak, called Midwife. Now with the homebirth midwives soon to lose their malpractice insurance they are showing this movie about a homebirth midwife in Vermont, who is stuck with a lady at birth in a snow storm who dies in labor and she cuts her open to save the baby and gets sued for murder and goes through this awful trial. Not a movie to see during these troubled times for a midwife in Israel, and certainly not before a birth, but I couldn't stop watching, even though I had read the book and seen the video before. Did any of you watch it??? Anyway, at the end and after Chicago Hope, my lady called with stronger contractions and more frequent so I left right away. As soon as I saw her I saw the change and knew she was in good labor. She was 3 centimeters, and not so happy and cheerful as before. Good contractions with a soft and thin cervix. Most women hate lying down in bed during contractions, but just like her first birth, she likes to lie in bed and move around with her husband massaging her back. She began later to moan and got totally detatched from us all and went into that secret and very primitive place where women need to go to let their bodies work and their minds stop thinking. Those are the really great birthers. She just went with her body and let go and opened beautifully. I would ask her softly if maybe she wanted the shower or bath, but she would barely answer and just communicated to me that she was fine, just giving birth and not to bother her. Meanwhile her Mom had come for a visit that day, and was sleeping in the next room with instructions not to come out until after the birth,. It was nice because she was able to take charge if necessary of their 2 year old daughter sleeping with Grandma in the next room. She never even woke up and needless to say, Grandma didn't sleep a wink. An hour later her moaning and thrashing got more intense and I decided to get all the birth equipement ready, including the bowl of hot water and oil and compresses and baby hat and cord cutting kit,and warmed the diapers to dry the baby. I checked her again, and she was now 6 cm. with a paper-thin cervix. I put an underpad under her and said that probably soon that her water would break because the bag was bulging and tight on my examination. Next contraction, sure enough it burst and then I see she begins to grunt and push with the next contraction. I put my gloves on and her husband is shocked that he can see the head inside. 5 minutes later half the head of bushy black hair is out and she is stretching great and I ask her to pant and slowly the head is out, and then the shoulders and she reaches down and pulls out her baby to her chest as her new daughter gives a lusty cry and is all pink and creamy with vernix. She is at her breast and they call to Grandma to come and join the celebration. Grandma runs in with tears streaming down her face to meet her new grandaughter. Just then the baby grabs the nipple all by herself and we all marvel at the wonders of nature. What a fabulous birth!. Lila Tov, Ilana
