busy weekend, two great out of hospital births
כותרת:
Friday morning I woke up by myself at 7:15. Those of you who know me know that I usually wake up at 11:00. This is due to my crazy biological clock, which was reinforced by 8 years of working two nights a week at the hospital delivery room. Anyway, I guess I was "feeling her contractions". She called at 7:30 to say that contractions started, and that I should soon hit the road, since her first birth was pretty quick at Misgav Ledach. I didn't even drink my coffee, and quickly organized my bags. When I got there, I saw a glowing and radiant women, surrounded by other wise women, her mother massaging her and giving her Reiki, her doula friend, and her other friend whose birth she had been there to help her through not long ago. She was in and out of the shower, moving into all kinds of positions, breathing and swaying. She was moving fast and the atmosphere was so joyful and "holy". Her husband was attending to their 4 year old ( with the maturity of a 40 year old) who came in and out to check on things and give encouragement. She quickly dilated and got into the hands and knees position, and with two pushes, the water broke and the baby was out. I passed it between her legs to her and she scooped him up to her chest and hopefully you will see some great digital pictures in the near future. What a high! I got home in time to prepare for my 11 year old's birthday party, with 9 girlsfriends sleeping over! She is my youngest, and just last week she decided to put away the Barbies and dollhouse, as she is too grownup. That was a bit of a blow to me to realize that my baby is no longer a baby, but entering teenagehood. No more Barbies with their deformed feet and lack of genitals? I guess I will save them for my future grandchildren, or will they be too feminist by then??? anyway ...by midnight my husband and I realized that in order to get any sleep we would have to sleep in the birth clinic in the backyard, as the noise level was unbearable. I just hoped that no one would need to birth there that night. After a great nights sleep, at 9 AM, the phone rang and I knew by the sound of her voice that she must be in labor to call on Shabat, as she is very orthodox. After changing sheets and getting the place ready they arrived. Since it was Shabat, her husband was not allowed to turn off the motor so my husband had to find a Thailand worker (not Jewish ) to switch the motor off. She labored all Shabat, and I helped her with massage and lots of encouragement, and at 5 centimeters I suggested her to go into the bath. It gave her amazing relief. Her husband was outside in the shade under the big tree praying, and we heard him in the background, and it sounded to me like bees buzzing. Her births are never easy, and I have helped her birth her other 3 babies in my clinic over the last l0 years. This was number five. After an hour and a half she felt like pushing, and then a cloud of water in the bath, and then out came the little blonde head , and then seconds later the whole baby was in the water and I gently gave him to his Mommy who was anxiously waiting to see if it was a boy or girl. She had two of each, and felt it was now time for a boy, and she was right!! A very satisfying and fulfilling Shabat to say the least!!It was interesting to hear my daughter explaining to her friends all about homebirth, and how she herself was born at home. Their eyes were wide with amazement. Ilana Shemesh
