לידת בית כחוויה מתקנת
כותרת:
This was I's second birth. Her first birth was a very traumatic birth, physically and emotionally. She did a prenatal class, wanted natural birth, but chose a well-known Jerusalem hospital, that didn't have a policy of natural birth, even though on the tour, they were told that they could do whatever they wanted. Her birth began with her water breaking. She had learned that she must go to the hospital right away. After 6 hours of walking the halls, and her contractions did not start, she was told she must be induced or she would get an infection. She was given an IV with Pitocin, strapped to a monitor, and put to bed. After 4 hours she was 8 centimeters. The midwife saw her moaning and told her she must have an epidural as it would be hours till the birth. She agreed, and then very soon after, there began severe fetal distress, with the heartbeat very low. Very soon after she was fully dilated and the doctor did a vacuum birth, with a large episiotomy. The baby was taken to the nursery and separated from the mother for many hours for observation. A very classic story of hospital managed birth. I see it as a series of mistakes, and interventions that caused many dangerous complications. First of all, hospitalization for water breaking. The water was clear, movements felt well, head well engaged. Why was she examined at all? An internal exam predisposed her to infection. Unnecessary. Then she was not given a comfortable place to be and got exhausted walking around. Then she was not given a chance to start her labor naturally. Why only after 6 hours induced and not at least 24 hours? She needed to be in a comfortable and intimate environment so that her body could prepare for birth, and not a stressful hospital. The worst mistake of all was to suggest an epidural at 8 centimeters when her labor was going so quickly. The epidural caused the fetal distress most likely. The vacuum was the end result. This time she choose a totally different approach. She birthed out of hospital. Her water broke again at 38 weeks, but she waited at home, taking her temperature every 4 hours, no internal exams and paying attention to movements. She began contractions after 23 hours, and after a few hours of irregular and easy contractions she had a dilation of 3 centimeters. Then she had 40 minutes of heavy labor, and felt the urge to push. She pushed out her baby with no problem after 15 minutes. No tearing (she trained with the epi-no for 11 days)and baby was on her stomach and nursing well within a few minutes. So for all those who think that hospital birth is so safe and homebirth is so dangerous, this story shows you that what is the accepted cultural norm may, in fact, be a myth. The sad part is why she had to learn the hard way. There are many stories like this.
