Osnat, the birthing center idea is definately better than the regular hospital route, but you do need to know that about one-third of women who are planning to go there don't get accepted in the end. This is usually because they have to do a monitor first, and due to the innaccuracies of fetal monitoring and the very high rate of false positives and poor subjective interpretation by staff, many women are risked out. Their criteria is very strict, and at the slightest thing you end up with all kinds of interventions. It is still in a hospital and you have to play by the rules of the institution with the doctors in charge, although they are in the background with a low profile. It is not a freestanding birth center like in other countries, and there is a big difference between an in-hospital birth center and a freestanding birth center. Research done comparing the two show that the intervention rate is much higher and the outcomes are not better. Research comparing homebirth to birth center outcomes, show even less intervention and transfer rates, with similar or better outcomes than both freestanding and in-hospital birth centers.
