an ecological homebirth story
כותרת:
Last week I did a wonderful birth in my clinic for a couple that really respects and practices ecology. As you all can imagine, birth tends to be a bit messy, with amniotic fluid, blood, and other body secretions. Usually we use large rectangular disposable underpads (60x90)to protect the bed or other birth area. Then we use extra large disposable pads for the bleeding after birth. Then disposable diapers for the baby. So you see, all this luxury and simplicity is quite an ecological disaster, considering how long it takes (if ever) for these things to disintegrate. They decided to bring lots of old towels and rags and one package of special (and expensive) disposable but made from organic materials that dissolve eventually)baby diapers that we could also use as pads for her bleeding after birth. They also brought their own sheets. I put a heavy nylon washable underpad under everything. It was their first birth, it was not easy, but very empowering and a positive experience for all of us. The epi-no and her nice perineum granted us a stitch-free birth. She birthed squatting on the floor. This birth was a learning experience for me. We soaked her towels in water so that the blood wouln't dry and then she took it all home to wash. There was no mess and the effort was minimal. Also a savings financially for her. All that disposable stuff is not cheap. Natural birth goes hand in hand with a respect for our planet and just like birth, for the best outcomes we do need to invest some effort.
