When I raised my two daughters 25 and 22 years ago we all used playpens a lot. We put lots of toys in and the babies seemed to be happy. When they cried, or we were done with our work, we picked them up and cuddled them, and breastfed them when necessary. I don't know if it was right or wrong, but my two girls are great. One is 4th year medical school and a very compassionate and terrific person, and the other is studying special education and has a great passion for teaching as I have for my midwifery. The old wooden playpen, that looked kind of like a prison didn't seem to hurt them at all, and I was able to study midwifery. We are a very close family and they never told me that they felt neglected. On the other hand, my second one slept with us until age 6, and number 3 until age 8. I just did what worked for me, so use your instincts.
