cord blood--answer to Maya

Dear Maya, When a woman has blood type Rh negative (about l5% of the popultion ) then the babies blood type needs to be taken. This can be done easily by taking some blood from the umbilical cord that is attatched to the placenta or from a vein on the placenta, as this is the babies blood. This way you don't have to stick the baby for blood. G6PD deficiency (allergic to ful) is also tested that way. Also if a wom;an is type O and her partner is type B or A or AB, then it is good to also test the babies blood type as sometimes if the baby is A or B then the mother builds antibodies against this foreign blood type and the baby can have early onset jaundice (zahevet) which can be very severe and needs to be treated. This is usually done in all the hospitals by taking cord blood .
