Very often, unfortunately stripping is done without asking permission and this happens in all hospitals according to the particular whim of the doctor or midwife. There is no reason at all that you should have a vaginal exam on a routine postdate checkup, unless you are having active and regular and painful contractions. If you do agree to this, then just say first, no stripping please. Do remember though, that when you are ripe and nearing 42 weeks it is probably a lot better to stimulate the labor with gentle (not brutal) stripping than having an induced labor with pitocin or prostaglandins. However, it should not be done without your permission and without a good reason to do it. Ilana
