DEar Anat, Stripping is when during a vaginal exam, the midwife or doctor inserts one or two fingers in the slightly opened cervix (you need to be able to get in a finger) and then you go around and around between the bag of waters and the cervix, and this causes release of prostaglandins which can trigger birth. It usually will dislodge the mucous plug and there will be usually some blood. Just like any vaginal exam, it can be done quickly and roughly, or slowly and gently, and telling the women just what will happen, what she will feel, and assuring her that you will stop at any time she says.
