I do understand what you are saying and have to agree in part. If you arm yourself with knowledge, like the disadvantages of monitoring, infusion, fasting, episiotomies, baby separation etc, that can be a big help. But if the doctor just mentions the words "fetal distress" then there is nothing you can do if you don't have a private midwife . You can ask for another doctor's opinion, which is definately worth it. If you ask 5 doctors to interpret a monitor, you will get several opinions, unless they feel that supporting each other is more important than good medicine, which can happen also. That's why it's safest not to be on the monitor at all and to only agree on intermittent listening to the heartbeat. That's what all the research shows anyway.
