I have 3 kids. With my first 2 I was the same: kept small objects out of reach (easier with #1 :-) ) until the age of 3 or so. My 3rd child has been a gift to me in many ways, most of which is the lessons he has tought me. I was very fortunate to come across Yonat's article when my baby was 4 months old. As soon as I finished reading the article, I went and got a bead, the size of a nail, and gave it to my baby. It soon found its way into his mouth :-). It stayed there for a few mintues and then got spat out. Since then I have given him free access to most object in the house (I make sure that no food or other desolving substances enter his mouth though). He is now 8 months old and has started eating solids. It amazes me how he knows to diffrentiate between food and non edable objects. Despite the fact that he almost always has something in his mouth, his nappy is quite clearly stuffed with food remains only! (I did fing a bead the other day actualy...). Anyways, I actualy feel MUCH safer with him than I did with the other 2, because I trust that he KNOWS! If anyone is interested in following Yonat's approach, it is most important to make sure that the baby has not yet satrted eating solids and that he still has the gag reflex.
