Thirty percent of women are GBS carriers, but only 1% of those babies will be infected, and much less if you get antibiotics during labor. If you have GBS in your urine, there is more of a chance of the baby being infected. Yes, it can get infected during the pregnancy, and is a cause of premature birth, but this is not common. Most women are not even checked for it and probably many birth fine with no antibiotics at all, since the rate of infection is very low. However, it can be life-threatening and can cause serious pneumonia or meningitis. The longer your water is broken,the more chance of baby infection. So if you have a quick birth, and the water breaks at the end, it is very unlikely that there is any danger at all. It is the most problematic with the carriers who have water broken more than 12 hours. Therefore, it is VERY IMPORTANT not to allow your water to be broken, and it should just break on its own even as the baby is birthing. Also no internal monitors. The less vaginal exams the better. If you get antibiotics but 4 hours haven't passed until the birth, then the baby will need to get antibiotics after the birth. Nothing major to worry about, it is just really preventive medicine. You also have the option of refusing antibiotics to the baby, but just taking blood and placenta and amniotic fluid (from the suction) cultures after birth and waiting for results.
