there is no medical or scientific evidence that the monitor strip in the labor improves outcomes at all. Therefore, a hospital that is advertising "natural birth" is really cheating the public, because putting a woman on a monitor during labor is the opposite of a natural birth, and it really bugs me that all these women who plan to use the natural birthing rooms with the special trained staff are prevented from doing so because they put them on the monitor in the admissions room, and very often there are "sleepy babies". Babies during labor move less, and have sleep cycles, and ther are many other reasons why the monitor may not be perfect, and this is usually NOT an indication of fetal distress. At homebirths, monitors are never used, and there is much less fetal distress and better or same outcomes for low-risk women. If you really want a natural birth, first step is to refuse the monitor and agree only to frequent listening by the midwife. I'm surprized that you didn't pick yourself up and just go home with your baby if you couldn't get rooming in. No one has to stay in the hospital after birth, as birth is not an illness. Just that modern society likes to make you think it is an illness and take away your trust in yourself as a mother and woman. I wish you much joy from your baby, and thank you for sharing your story with us so that we can learn.
