glucose testing כותרת:
This depends on various factors. For instance, if the parents are small people. If the baby is born at 37 or 38 weeks. In these two cases, I would not be concerned. However, if we have two large parents and a baby of 41 weeks, perhaps this is necessary. Then again, 2500 is OK, if nursing well and very frequently. 2300 g. is another story, and needs evaluation. New research indicates that the worst time to check newborns for glucose is the first 2 hours after birth as this only shows what glucose was in utero, and then it always falls lower and only after 2 hours does the normal newborn begin his counter-regulatory response and his glucose rises. The first glucose testing should be delayed until after feeding, from 4-6 hours after birth. Skinny babies can have difficulty burning their "fat" for glucose and therefore be hypoglycemic. So it is important to assess this 2500 g. baby as to if it looks skinny or is just short but not skinny. My point here is that each case needs to be individually assessed, and not to apply routines like in hospitals: all babies under 2500 or over 3800 need glucose testing, and certainly not within the first 4 hours.
