12/12/2004 18:29 Ilana Shemesh, natural midwife מאת: LIES, LIES AND A WITCH-HUNT כותרת: Judy is a dear friend of mine, a wonderful person and skilled midwife, and is now the victim of a malicious withch-hunt and the sacrifical lamb of the medical establishment's desire to make homebirth extinct. She is a certified nurse- midwife with a masters degree in Midwifery from the United States, and is a midwifery researcher as well, who has published many articles in the world-wide midwifery and medical journals. She has been forever a freedom fighter for women's birthing rights, and is a strong advocate of the right of a woman to birth with whomever and wherever she feels is right for her. When she came to Israel she worked for a while in Misgav Ledach where she was given a temporary midwifery licence. Then she went back to the U.S.for a few years. When she returned, they had lost her records in the Ministry of Health, and the laws had changed, and they insisted she do a long hospital internship. Considering her credentials and her intense dislke of the hospital system of birth, she declined this option. She has been serving women for years and doing births in Gush Emunim where other midwives won't go. Women love her and she is a skilled midwife and it saddens me terribly to hear this terrible gossip about her. Today it is about her, tomorrow about me and next week another homebirth midwife will be victimized. If a midwife tells a women to heat the house, and the women says yes and then forgets to light the heater in the winter and leaves her baby in a cold room and the baby nearly dies of a low temperature next day, is this the midwive's fault????There are not three cases against her. It is all lies and gossip. I personally would have her catch my baby any time before I would set foot in any hospital in Israel with invasive and dangerous routines, where I have no idea or any control over who is my midwife, what are her skills, and if she is a student even. With all due credit to all the rules and regulations and licensing, it is not always in the best interests of birthing women.
