Dear Iris, Most of the women decided on pain medication early on or halfway. My best tip for you is to ask the midwife not to suggest at any time pain medication, and to not allow the anesthesiologist to come in and offer, and not the obstetrician either. Your partner also must not suggest pain medication. You know it's there if you need it. Important not to be connected at all to the monitor, and not to get pitocin and not to break waters until very late. All these interventions affect your pain coping mechanisms by immobilizing you or creating abnormally strong contractions. Believe in yourself and your body and your strength as a woman. Trust nature more than medicine, as birth is a natural event not a medical one.
